Floor Panels
4th & 5th of July 2003

Right, now that the majority of the donor parts have been refurbished it was time to dive in and start the build.  Having had a look on other sites, and read the build manual, the first job was to rivet the floor panels on.  Selecting which bits of metal are the floor panels is easy, perhaps what is not quite as obvious is that they are not the same size - mainly due to the fact that the car is not symmetrical.  The driver's side is larger that the passenger's side.  So check which panel goes where.

Tiger pre-cut the panel to nearly the correct size but they do need a little work to trim down to the right size.  Use of a good pair of aviation snips, a file and wet and dry paper is advisable.

My panels where not the same length - the passenger side was not quite long enough to cover completely the front and read chassis members.  I had decided that I would therefore cut both panels to the same length and I would cut out a section where the rear suspension members bolt to the chassis so that the nut/bolt/washer combination would be directly against the chassis rather than onto soft alloy.

Cut out for suspension nut/bolt/washer.  Also shows the panel not covering all the rear chassis member. Note the shaping for the suspension support area.

I took my time to get the panel to a size I was content with and also made sure the panel edges were smooth and rounded.  All to try and ensure a good build quality.  I then took quite a bit of time to mark-out the rivet placements.

To provide a weather seal and to again improve build quality, I used sealant between the chassis and floor panels.

Sealant used on all contact points.

Simply a case of starting at one end and drilling/riveting.

At this stage I have not riveted the outer edge.  Manual advises that this is completed when you place sides on car.
