The next step was to try and get the engine in.
First fitted a new clutch and connected the gearbox to the engine.
Attached the engine mounts to the engine and then using an engine hoist
slowly lower engine into car. Followed the manual by using 2
wooden blocks to lower engine onto to simulate the rubber mounts.
This is really when initial problems started as I wasn't really happy
with the clearance offered between the engine and the front springs.
After a lot of head scratching we decided that a small section of the
front drivers side footwell needed to be removed to allow the engine to
slide back into the tunnel. After use of a hammer and drill a
small 'modification was completed and engine position with good
clearance. We then tried to fit the original sierra alternator
only to find that it wouldn't fit. After a few hours of head
scratching we (dad was helping me through all of this) decided that the
alternator would have to be lower. During a break I logged onto
the net only to quickly confirm this - if I'd have know it would have
saved us a good couple of hours. Anyway, realising that all was
well it was a simple case of drilling through the wooden blocks, lifting
the engine, replacing the blocks with the rubber mounts and tighten the
nuts. I used 5 washers on the inlet side to raise that side if the
engine slightly so that there was good clearance for the carbs.
Simply then a case of drilling the gearbox mounts and bolting up.
Engine finally in!
