Refurbishment of Parts - Gearbox
& Final Drive Shafts (14th June to
1st July 03)
|
Not quite finished refurbishing all the parts. Next came the
gearbox. This was a simple process of degreasing and painting.

The next big job was the final drive shafts. These were dirty and
although the CV rubber boots were not split, they were on their last legs
and I really wanted the change them.

Drive shafts before refurb |

Now knowing that to replace with the Ford item would be a long and
difficult job, I looked for alternatives. Found some of the
universal split boots that you stick together using glue, but they were
expensive and I had heard that some had had problems with them.
Had read that a company call Rhino Rubber had some boots that you simply
stretch over the shaft ends using a special cone. Looked
Rhino up on the Internet but they only sell 'starter packs' that include
12 boots - far more than I need. However, I rang them up and
they put me in touch with a local garage that had just ordered a box and
a quick chat with them secured 4 boots with grease and tie-raps and they
let me borrow the cone and some special lubricant. Spent quite a
few hours cleaning the shafts up, painted them then spent a Saturday
afternoon putting rubbers on. Quite pleased with the results as
